The Carmichael Rail Network (CRN) is a 200km narrow gauge railway connecting Queensland’s Galilee Basin to existing rail infrastructure and the North Queensland Export Terminal – Australia’s most northerly coal export port. The CRN was constructed by Bravus as part of the Carmichael Project. The railways opens access to the Galilee Basin for further development, creating new jobs and business opportunities for Queenslanders.

Animal safety has always been a top priority for Bowen Rail Company. Efforts to reduce the risk from our operations to animals as much as possible have been built into our work, from the design of the rail corridor that prioritised the use of cleared land or non-remnant vegetation areas, to our ongoing animal monitoring.

Safety has been a priority from the earliest stages of the Carmichael Rail Network’s design and development and our safety-first mindset continues into daily operations. Each and every day, the Bowen Rail Company is committed to the highest safety standards and to ensuring its people live the company’s robust safety culture. At Bowen Rail Company, safety means complying with all relevant rail safety legislation, embracing safety innovations, ensuring a safe working environment and helping to keep the community safe when they work, live or drive near the rail network.

Minimising and reducing the impact of noise along the Carmichael Rail Network has long been a key focus of our environmental management. Our measures to reduce and mitigate noise are aimed at protecting the health and biodiversity of local ecosystems, and ensuring an environment that is conducive to human health with appropriate sound levels for people to sleep, study or learn, and relax. We have a history of ensuring noise controls are effective. In the first year of operation we received zero complaints relating to noise or vibration, following on from zero complaints during construction.

Bowen Rail Company is committed to playing its part to ensure clean air for people living and working along the Carmichael Rail Network. We use the best methods available to reduce and suppress all types of dust from freight rail operations along the network. Our goal is to ensure that our coal trains do not create dust that can blow off onto the surrounding countryside.
